This is a beautiful and uncommon black hard rubber (ebonite) octagonal safety fountain pen from the golden era of German pen manufacturing. Measuring approximately 10.5 cm capped, it features a classic retractable "safety" nib mechanism operated by gently twisting the blind cap at the end of the barrel.
Barrel imprint: ★ Max ★ (likely a retailer or custom branding, possibly linked to Max Adler & Co., Berlin – known distributor of Osmia pens)
The ebonite has naturally oxidized to a warm brownish tone over 90+ years, which is typical and enhances its vintage appeal. No cracks or damage; the retractable mechanism moves smoothly and lightly – the nib extends and retracts easily as intended (you twist to extend the nib for writing, and retract it for safe storage).
The pen has NOT been inked or tested with ink (only briefly dipped in water to check nib flexibility – it shows promise as a smooth writer).
It is sold unrestored.
This piece closely matches early Osmia safety models from Heidelberg, renowned for their quality in the 1920s. Osmia frequently produced pens for retailers, making the "Max" imprint particularly interesting.
